Mud (solid liver) can’t wait for the retrieve and dives in hoping there may be something already on the water. Jack (liver & white ticked) and Daisy (liver and roan puppy) are quick to follow and soon realize, after treading water, I still have the dummies. They absolutely love the water and retrieving.

Kota – Hello Porcupine

In the last hour, of the last day, of chukar season, Kota made a nice 125-yard cast over a small saddle and returned with a surprise. She was pawing at her muzzle and rubbing her face in the grass.
I grabbed hold of her and removed bundles of quills as quickly as possible to prevent her from driving any of them any deeper.

Is wasn’t until after I had removed dozens of quills from her nose, muzzle, tongue, mount & gums, and chin that I paused to snap a couple of pictures. She went into that porcupine with her mouth wide open and had the damage to prove it. No other dogs suffered the same fate and we avoided Kota’s loop completely on our way out

Jack – Great Start on His First Season

Jack is a Tick X Zack pup I kept from last spring with the intention of bringing him into our breeding program. He is off to a fantastic start on chukar. He seems to have a great nose, ranges well, pointed the first covey he pointed, and has eagerly retrieved the birds I have shot. With other dogs he is also backing naturally. I am really excited to see him develop into a mature hunting companion. I haven’t had him out for ducks and geese yet but he loves water retrieves, so cold, icy conditions may be the only thing that could put a damper on those festivities.

This was a nice change of pace from trekking around steep mountains and rocky cliffs. I really enjoy pheasant and quail hunting but as more farms are broken up and developed and hunting leases become common, finding access is increasingly difficult. I have grown to prefer the seclusion and expanse of rough, chukar country, but I jumped at the chance to run the thick, fringe, farmland in search of pheasants and quail. It’s tough having to pull the dogs in so close to work the tight cover but we were definitely rewarded for the effort.
